No trip to Tanzania is complete without an understanding of legendary Tanzanian hospitality – but how to experience this in an ethical and respectful manner?

Our Responsible Tourism tours are designed to have minimal impact on the environment and its inhabitants, on work and for clients, while allowing you to see what we do with your own eyes in order to provide income-generating opportunities to local families. We require a minimum of 48-hour notice for all guests. Morning tours begin at 9am and afternoon tours will begin at 1pm. Variations to these times can be accommodated on a case by case basis. Standard Tours

Half-day (3-4hour) activities, either 9am or 1pm start preferred. Standard tours cost $100 per person. Add $10 per person for lunch. Discounts are available for groups.

Coffee Tour

From bean to cup, we’ll guide you through the traditional methods of coffee cultivation on the slopes of Mt. Meru. We will pick, process, winnow, grind, roast and drink together, and you can take a bag home as a memento of your time.

Jewelry Making

Get to know a vocational jewelry studio, helping young adults to build creative businesses, and learn about their journeys. You’ll bring home at least one piece of beaded or metal jewelry that you’ve made yourself.

Microfinance Visit

At her home and farm, you’ll hear the story of one of the incredible women who we’ve helped to build sustainable businesses to support their families. You’ll drink chai (tea) or coffee, and can also milk the cow or collect eggs.

Swahili Cooking Class

Learn to make traditional Tanzanian dishes, from shopping for fresh ingredients at the local market, to eating your delicious completed meal! Vegetarian options available, no extra charge for lunch for this tour.

Ecotour and Tree Planting

Learn all about the flora of Mt. Meru, including traditional use of medicinal plants. Then help plant new seedlings at our site, to reduce erosion of the slopes where we live, and to provide necessary nutrition.

Local Market Tour

A visit to the market on Wednesday or Saturday is a great chance to stretch your legs, but you should go for the experience and not to buy. This market is noisy and can be overwhelming, but exciting, and shows how families really live!

Lake Duluti

Canoe and/or hike around the beautiful Lake Duluti, with unbeatable views of Mt. Meru and an incredible variety of birds and reptiles. Your guide can also tell you about how the lake and mountain fit into local legend. 2-3 hours to hike or canoe, 5 hours for both.

Pottery

In Tengeru we will visit a group of local potters who create beautiful and functional pieces of locally mined clay. You’ll learn to prepare the clay, turn it on a foot-powered wheel, and fire it in a traditional kiln to take home with you.

Waterfall Hike

This full-day trip includes a visit to a local waterfall, about a 2 hour hike each way. The cost includes your knowledgeable guide who will tell you about the Meru tribe, entry fees to benefit the local community, and lunch.
